The brutal ten year civil war in Sierra Leone left 50,000 dead, displaced a third of the population and reduced the country to grinding poverty...British charity EducAid provides free education for 1000 war effected children in four schools in Freetown and its surrounding area. Many suffered horrifc experiences during the war, either as child soldiers or as rebel captives. 200 were orphaned and bed down nightly in the classroom.Despite these setbacks the senior exam results were seventh in the country last year and 35 pupils have gone on to university.
